What's Changing?

New federal Medicaid rules begin as early as October 1, 2026. Starting January 1, 2027, some adults ages 19 to 64 must complete 80 hours of work or other qualifying activities to get or keep Medicaid. Many adults subject to this rule will also need to renew their Medicaid every six months instead of every 12 months. Many people are exempt from the work or activity rule, and Native Indians will continue to renew Medicaid every 12 months. Federal rules will also reduce retroactive Medicaid coverage from three months to one month for most adults ages 19 to 64 and to two months for older adults and people with disabilities.

Beginning October 1, 2026, federal Medicaid eligibility changes will affect about 2,350 lawfully present immigrants, including refugees, asylees, trafficking victims and humanitarian parolees. Members who are affected should follow the steps in their HCA notice to get state-funded coverage through BeWell. Lawful permanent residents, COFA migrants, and Cuban and Haitian entrants will continue to qualify for federally funded Medicaid under this change.
